Query:
Buddhism is largely a nondual belief, as is Advaita. Buddha lived and died a Hindu. Although he rejected
Vedas outwardly, he had to know the Vedas very fluently. Do you think then, Buddha was heavily influenced by
the Advaitic (correct) interpretation of the Vedas, in his
teachings?
Vijay Kumar:
The earlier we burn the karma in its entirety... the earlier one reaches
the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana). It seems Gautama Buddha could not comprehend the meaning of the
Vedas in its entirety. Vedas contain absolute truth of life.
Why?
Veda... the spoken word directly emanated from God Almighty. They simply
cannot contain any impurity... it just cannot be! Whatever is contained in the four Vedas... the rig Veda,
Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda shall always withstand the test of time! Vedas contain absolute truth
only. Nothing contained in the four Vedas can ever be belied!
Initially came Vedas... all four of them! Thereafter followed Vedanta...
the sacred wisdom of Bhagavad Gita... the doctrine given to mankind by Lord Krishna! The voluminous Vedas
were almost impossible to comprehend even by learned scholars... what to say of commoners... the
masses!
Seeing this predicament of the masses... God Almighty juiced the four
Vedas into a single document... the Sacred Bhagavad Gita! Whatever is contained in the Vedas is also
contained in the Sacred Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna... the commentator of Bhagavad Gita is considered as an
Avatar (God manifest in human form).
Lord Krishna is the first wisest human being who traveled Mother Earth!
Only when Lord Krishna came into the scene... the wisdom contained in the Sacred Bhagavad Gita precipitated
to the masses... never before! The tree of Dharma continued its journey.
Going back in time when even Vedas did not exist... mankind still
existed. How? It was Dharma... that sustained life on Mother Earth! Guided by the inherent Dharma... as human
beings evolved further they developed higher levels of intelligence!
Comes a time when Lord Krishna is born. About thousand years later... the
tree of Dharma developed a branch... Mahavira was born! The following of Mahavira was termed Jainism. Even
though Jainism is considered existing from times immemorial... the doctrine of Jainism precipitated to the
masses only during the times of Mahavira... the prime reason why Jainism is recognized by Mahavira... the 24
preceptor of Jainism!
About 77 years later the tree of Dharma further developed another branch.
Gautama Buddha was born. The following of Gautama Buddha was termed Buddhism. About 423 years later another
branch segmented. Jesus Christ came into the scene. The following of Jesus Christ was termed
Christianity.
Subsequently followed Prophet Mohammed, then Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa
and Ramana Maharishi! Apart from Lord Krishna... all these man gods (human gods) gained enlightenment
(kaivalya jnana) in their lifetime. All were born ordinary mortals accept Lord Krishna. Having gained
enlightenment... these man gods developed a following... later on termed a religion!
Whatever was known to Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet
Mohammed... was also known to Lord Krishna but not vice versa! Whatever wisdom Lord Krishna possessed...
Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed had a portion of it!
If Lord Krishna stood at 16... It is possible Mahavira stood at 12,
Gautama Buddha at 10, Jesus Christ at 8 and Prophet Mohammed at 6! As the tree of Dharma progressed
further... there was proportionate deterioration in the achievements of mankind. During the times of Lord
Krishna... the wisdom was at its peak... Sun burnt brightly in full glory... it was 12 o'clock
noon!
As the clock chimed 6 p.m. came Mahavira! At 8 p.m. came Gautama
Buddha... at 10 p.m. Jesus Christ and when the clock chimed 12 o'clock in the night... Prophet Mohammed!
Another four hours to go came Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana. And finally mankind landed in
Kali Yuga... when it was 4 a.m. in the morning!
We are presently passing through the ghor Kali Yuga phase of life when
the clock rings 5 a.m. in the morning. It is another one hour to go before the dawn of a new era... the
golden period... the golden age... the Satyuga! We still have seven years more before the clock rings 6 a.m.
in the morning!
Between 5 a.m. and 6 am is the expected world war 3!
As is apparent from above... none in the hierarchy is new to Lord Krishna
or his doctrine of Bhagavad Gita! Whenever an enlightened one swayed from the path of absolute
truthfulness... there developed a separate following which was finally termed a separate religion!
It does not mean that the teachings of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus
Christ or Prophet Mohammed are flawed and had defects in them. In other words it can be simply stated... If
Bhagavad Gita contains 16 nuggets of wisdom... the preaching's of Mahavira only 15, the Buddhist scriptures
14, the teachings of Christianity 12 and the Sacred Quran 11!
If we desire going from New Delhi to Bombay... we can catch a plane, a
train, bus, rickshaw or travel even on foot. We can also travel by Rajdhani, mail, express or passenger
train! Whatever be the mode one ultimately reaches the destination! Similar happened in the case of all man
gods like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed!
The teachings of all enlightened ones contain absolute purity yet, the
interpretations vary! The path Mahavira took was the path of Bhagavad Gita but slightly diluted. The path
undertaken by Gautama Buddha was still more diluted and so on. With passage of time more and more impurities
crept in... Leading to varied interpretations which sometimes went wrong!
Gautama Buddha definitely believed in the teachings of Bhagavad Gita but
certain content of Bhagavad Gita was not clear to him! He interpreted the teachings of Bhagavad Gita in his
own manner. He believed in the teachings of Veda but interpreted them in his own manner!
In a nutshell... nearer the enlightened one to Bhagavad Gita... more pure
the teachings of one! Mahavira definitely had more wisdom than Gautama Buddha. Similarly Gautama Buddha had
greater depth of wisdom than Jesus Christ. In the same line Jesus Christ had more wisdom than Prophet
Mohammed.
None of the enlightened souls... their teachings can ever be criticized
by one for all reached the end of the journey... the 8.4 millionth manifestation! All gained enlightenment
(kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha) in their lifetime. Whatever be the mode and the path...
finally all reached Bombay from New Delhi.
May God bless all!
